The Roman Catholic Institution refers to itself as “the church” believing
that they are the one and only true church.
In today’s verse we see that the word in the Greek text was changed
from plural to singular. The
word is properly written “ekklesiai” which denotes plurality of churches or
assemblies. The word has been
replaced in the critical Greek text with “ekklesia” which shows a single
church. The idea of a single
church plays right into Roman Catholic teaching.
However, the text of verse 31 records three separate sections in
Israel denoting plurality because there were multiple churches in those
areas, so the singular would not fit the context.
It is important to look at the small changes because they too affect
the meaning of passages.
