Affected Teaching
The King James Bible states that “about” 5,000 men had eaten of the five loaves and two fishes. The modern versions state that 5,000 is a specific number. In the parallel account in Matthew 14, in verse 21 we read that the modern versions retain “about.” (Mat 14:21 KJV) And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. (Matthew 14:21 ESV) And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

In the Luke account in Luke 9, the modern versions also retain “about.” (Luke 9:14 KJV) For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. (Luke 9:14 ESV) For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”

So once again the modern versions cause confusion by using a specific number in the Mark account and an approximate number in Luke and Matthew.
