Last night (11/4/03) ABC in the New York area aired a show called Jesus, Mary, and da Vinci. It was just another resurrection of the old Gnostic heresy that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married. In the second century a man named Hippolytus and in the third century, the pagan philosopher Origen believed that the book Song of Solomon was a prophecy of the coming marriage relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene. When one studies the Song of Solomon, it is actually a spiritual description of the relationship between Christ and His church.
(Song 4:7 KJV) Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
(Eph 5:27 KJV) That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Jesus could not nor would he allow himself to become married. First of all, this would contradict the virgin birth. The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world a sinless man for the purpose of dying for His Elect. If there was any hint of sin in Him, then He could not have been the sinless Savior and His sacrifice would have been invalid. If Jesus would have married Mary Magdalene, then He would have become one flesh with a sinful woman. This would also mean He would have not been able to be the sinful Savior since He would have been one flesh with sin. Jesus did not come the first time to be married, His sole purpose was to become the sacrifice for sin for His Elect. He was not here to raise a family or a blood line.
(John 18:36 KJV) Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. If Jesus became married, then His kingdom would have been of this world, and any children that issued from the marriage, would be divine in nature, since Christ is God. If he did become married, then the Scripture would be null and void, making the Bible contain false statements, which would have the same effect on our salvation as if he had sinned. The ABC special mentioned the Scriptures very briefly and the ones they interviewed were Roman Catholics, Feminists, and two professors from Dallas Theological Cemetery. So their commentary was based upon all speculation because there wasnt a true Christian among them which brought out any spiritual truth to the matter. One of their main contentions was the Priory of Zion which is supposed to be a secret society based out of France which claims to be the literal descendants of Jesus Christ. Leonardo da Vinci was in that line and he supposedly included a woman in his painting The Last Supper. That woman was supposed to be Mary Magdalene. The Priory of Zion has become discredited among historical scholars.
Then toward the end of the program they went to one of their source materials called the Nag Hammadi library which is of Egyptian origin. They referred to the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Phillip where it is assumed by insertion of speculation into a fragmented papyrus that Jesus kissed Mary Magdalene on the mouth many times. The part where they claim it was the mouth is missing from the fragment, so the scholars insert mouth by means of speculation. They also focus on the scene right after the resurrection where Mary Magdalene wishes to cling to Jesus.
(John 20:17 KJV) Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.This verse would make no sense if Jesus was married to Mary. Would not He allow her to embrace Him? This verse teaches us a profound truth. Jesus was telling Mary not to cling to Him as a man but when He returns to His Father in Heaven, then there will come a new relationship between Jesus and His worldwide church. On the cross Jesus said It is Finished, which meant the salvation plan of God was now complete, now comes the results, the Fruit. As Jesus dealt with only 12 disciples for 3 years, now after He ascends he will be dealing with millions of disciples. Mary Magdalene did not see this at that time. Jesus sent her to the disciples. In other words, the propagation of the Gospel was soon to begin and that would happen when Jesus ascended permanently to Heaven and then sent the Holy Spirit 10 days later. So as we can easily conclude that Jesus was not concerning Himself with family but he was concerned with the Gospel and its worldwide distribution.
One must keep in mind that Egypt in the early centuries AD was nothing more than a hot bed of Anti-Christian philosophical intellectualism. It is from Alexandria that came the corrupted versions of the Bible which are now happily accepted by 99% of all Christians under the false guise of easier to read. It was this same group which has spawned this Gnostic attack on the Lord Jesus Christ that He was married and because their written authority is of satanic origin, we may take comfort that their speculations are not worthy of the lavatories of the worst seminaries in America.
ABC brought nothing new out and neither did the pundits they interviewed. This was just another media attempt to discredit the Lord Jesus Christ in His first appearance on earth, which was strictly for the purpose of dying for His Elect.
