Point by Point Definitions and Analyses of the Depart Out Teachings of Harold Camping of Family Radio

By Dr. Ken Matto

In making an attempt to analyze such a fragmented study, it is necessary to approach each fragment on an individual basis. It is like an Archaeologist who finds a cache of scrolls or writings from another era. Each individual papyrus or leaf has to be examined individually. It is the same with the Depart Out Teaching as each aspect of it must be approached individually. If the pieces do not fit in with proper biblical definition and hermeneutic, then if you try to piece many dissimilar and erroneous beliefs together, you will have created a teaching which opposes Scripture and is built on a foundation of sand.

Fragmented teachings are confusing and requires a person to sit down and try to piece all the chunks together to try to form some type of continuity in the teachings. However, this can never happen when a study begins with the idea that “we learn as we go along.” Would you like to have an operation by a doctor who will learn as he or she goes on in the operation? To advocate Christians to leave their churches on the basis of fragmented and incomplete analyses on this subject, constitutes nothing more than personal opinion or prejudice by the originator of the study.

Bits and piece studies reminds me of the fellow who called his best friend and told him that he was stuck trying to put a new puzzle together. His friend asked him, “what is the puzzle supposed to be?” The fellow said, “there is a picture of a Tiger on the front of the box.” “Well,” said the friend, “I will be over in a few minutes to help you out.” The friend arrives and sees the puzzle on the table. He says to his friend, “let’s have a cup of coffee and then afterwards we will put all the Frosted Flakes back in the box.” As you know Frosted Flakes have Tony the Tiger on the front. Unfortunately, this fellow was trying to take the uneven bits and pieces of Frosted Flakes and create some type of uniform picture of a Tiger, when there was no picture of a Tiger to begin with.

This is how a false teaching starts out. It always begins as a small fragment of study and then more things are added to it, not only by the author but by the adherents of the teachings also. This is precisely how the Depart Out Teachings are mushrooming. Now the points and teachings I am going to speak to in this refutation are all points that have been brought up by Harold Camping and those who follow this teaching. While it will be impossible to hit every single point, I am going to hit the major points which lie behind these teachings. It will be a simple question and answer format, though some of the answers may be a little involved. I have always stressed simplicity in my writings and will work with that guideline in mind. Let us begin our study.

I have also included links to previously written articles as I want to centralize the articles instead of having them in different places on the site. Please feel free to download these subjects and use them for personal studies or for your church.
